What is GSD (ground resolution)?
GSD determines how much detail an orthophoto shows. Here is how it relates to flight height and accuracy.
GSD stands for Ground Sample Distance: the distance on the ground that corresponds to one pixel in the image. A GSD of 2 cm means each pixel represents 2 × 2 cm of ground.
Why GSD is important
The smaller the GSD, the more detail. It co-determines which elements are recognisable — from a joint in concrete to a road marking — and relates to the achievable accuracy.
What does GSD depend on?
Mainly on the flight height and the camera. Flying lower gives a smaller GSD (more detail) but more images and flight time. We choose the GSD according to your goal.
